The Clayton Tunnel Railway Disaster
Forty six years after the railways were open to the public came one of the worse accidents to that date in Britain involving two trains in a tunnel in Sussex on a very busy main line route. It early morning on Sunday 25th August 1861 when one train ploughed into the back on another in the Clayton Tunnel, just five miles north of Brighton, killing 23 people and injuring 176. It was an accident waiting to happen. The photo above shows the rather pleasant Victorian facade to the north entrance, but the actually accident took place as the less fancy southern entrance.
Richard Vobes and Paul Stoneman go off to investigate this terrible accident and visit the tunnel to try and work out exactly what happened and why. The full audio is available in the Vobes Vault and members can access it and either listen online or download the presentation. You can hear a sample here to whet your appetite...
