In Search of a Roman Mansio
Mr. Pegram and I and Summer, Mr. P's dog, went off to Hardham in West Sussex, in search for the old Roman Station or mansio to give it's correct term. This is a tavern and resting place for travellers journeying on the old Stane Street, from Chichester to London. We took the Wey South Path, a footpath that lead us from delightful village of Coldwaltham to Pulborough to Midhurst dismantled railway line which transects the old Roman Station at Hardham. Although only a three to four mile circular walk in total we managed to cross the old roman road twice and with a bit of detective work found where it crossed other footpaths, even after nearly 2000 years.
