23rd March 2008
A Snug and Cozi movie is now on the site so you can see just how stupid Richard Vobes was with Nigel Cooper in our days at Scottish Television. The show was networked across the UK in 1996 and 1997. I wrote and co-produced them.
Other Video Previews
Welcome to the Video Preview page. I am producing a series of videos which explore an interesting element of the history of Sussex in England. This might be anything from old follies, to an abandoned mental hospital, or from ancient castles to medieval bridges. Check out the videos page and see what is new. You can watch online the preview and if you like what you see order the video to download in high quality. Enjoy the selection of historic videos below.
Sussex TollgatesThe Turnpike Trusts started erecting tollgates and collecting fees for road maintainence in 1663. Sussex has over 500 turnpiked roads and an asortment of curious buildings which over the recent years has all but a few disappeared. In this video I go in search of some of them.
The Medieval Bridge This is a short trailer of my recent visit to the medieval bridge at Stopham in West Sussex. This remarkable bridge is 600 years old, it has survived floods and Second World War tanks driving over it. It may not be the biggest bridge in the world, but in West Sussex it is most definitely the best loved one. It has beauty, charm and endurance. What more could you ask in a bridge?
The Racton Folly This is a short trailer of my recent visit to a very spooky folly. Thought to be a summer house or observation platform, the Racton Folly stands alone deserted on the top of a hill over looking Chichester in West Sussex. People say that it is haunted, and you do get an eerie feeling as you stand inside. The builder died before his work was complete and now it stands in rack and ruin, but do you think it should be turned into a private dwelling?
Hellingly Hospital This a short demo of the Hellingly Video. Hellingly Mental Asylum was founded in 1903 as a purpose built hospital for people with mental health problems. It is situated near the quiet village of Hellingly in East Sussex, close to the town Hailsham. It is fairly unique in as much that a small electric railway branched off the mainline to make it easier and no doubt more descreet to receive patients. I go to investigate this unusual and now derelict place.
If you have an idea for a subject for the Vobes to go and make video about, then why not suggest it to him. Send your thoughts to Richard via email. Have you something of historic interest that you would love the Vobes and team to have a look at. Then why not send an email and if we can promote it in the show we most definitely will do so. The email address is found on the contact us link at the top of the page.
Earlier Vobes work....
Through out history, Britain has been full of crazy eccentrics with crackpot ideas and madcap schemes. They built wacky edifices and invented oddball machines. Richard Vobes explores these crazy men and women from our glorious past and highlights their incredible lifestyles and improbable constructions. .
Imagine if the classic science fiction stories of H.G. Wells, Jules Verne and John Wyndham were not dreamt up fantasy, but actual factual accounts of history.Martians really did land on Horsell Common in Woking in 1895, man eating plants did wonder the streets eating humans in the late 1950's and during the nineteenth century an expedition was actually carried out to the centre of the Earth! .
So we say we are a multi-cultural society do we? Okay, what happens then when we receive a visitor from the planet Mars? Zoop is an illegal immigrant, an alien to this land who needs housing, employment and a balanced personal life. Only one problem - his skin is green. Will he fit in? .
Steve Snoops has the best job in the world. He must investigate sex and the weird and wonderful things ordinary people get up to behind closed doors! But all is not as it seems, as this show bends reality, but what may appear as an extreme to you and I, may in fact be the truth! .
Imagine is some took your mobile away from you, or your telly, your toilet roll, your cutlery or even your clothes - could you survive without them? .
